2 Simple Steps To Enjoy A Perfect Cup Of Coffee

Over the years I’ve found two extremely important  basics that go into making a perfect cup of coffee.

1) First your coffee maker must be kept pristine clean.

Making coffee over and over again with no cleaning of the coffee maker will make your coffee more and more bitter over time.  Result: nasty coffee! That gets nastier with each pot.

Coffee makers must be cleaned regularly: Pod Coffee machines, drip makers and percolators its all the same.

Sometimes I clean my pot 2 or 3 times a day.  Of course I’m obsessed with having absolutely perfect coffee every time I hoist my cup.  For the non anal average coffee drinker and even for the slightly obsessed. Cleaning your coffee maker at least 1 time a week should do the trick.

You should also rinse your coffee maker with baking soda and hot water after every pot of coffee made.  This procedure should be done soon after coffee is made while the coffee maker is still warm.

Note: Rinse several more times with clean, hot water to be sure that the soda residue is completely rinsed away.  Coffee with baking soda…Yuk!

Once a month You should also clean your coffee maker with cream of tarter.. Why cream of tarter?  Frankly I have absolutely no Idea, but I watched my Great Grandma, my Grandma and my Mom do this and it really works! 

Place a teaspoon of cream of tarter into the basket with a filter,  and let it go through the whole coffee-making cycle. With an automatic drip pot, put a teaspoon of cream of tarter into coffee basket with a filter, and a teaspoon of cream of tarter into the pot, and run through the entire cycle as though you were actually making a pot of coffee.

2) Second and most importantly, you should always and I do mean always never use unfiltered tap water to make your coffee.

The ultimate secret to a perfect cup of coffee is that the water that you use should be of the bottled variety, unless you are blessed with really good tap water lol. The chlorine and other chemicals in tap water definitely do affect the taste of coffee.

I have been lucky enough to live in California and have natural spring water and well water to make my perfect cup-a-joe.

So there you have it, 2 simple steps to perfect coffee.  Of course learning home coffee roasting and fresh ground beans doesn’t hurt!  -Enjoy your next cup.
