The Difference between Spa and Pamper Days   by I Need Pampering

Often when thinking of treating yourself to a bit of R&R, the definition between spa days and pamper days becomes blurred. So what exactly defines a spa experience as opposed to a pamper day?

The Dictionary definition states that a spa is a resort with a mineral spring or a tub for relaxation or invigoration. Looking back in history, Spas were first associated with mineral water – Spa towns such as Bath, Leamington Spa and Buxton were flocked to by hundreds upon hundreds of people to sample the waters healing properties. Many believed the natural water source could cure joint pain and other such ailments, as well as offering spiritual cleansing. The Greeks formed the foundations as what we know now of modern spa procedures, they established public baths and gymnasium facilities for relaxation and personal hygiene. The Romans developed these ideas further with separate rooms for undressing, bathing, “sweating” and massaging – it was seen as a time to cleanse the mind and purify the soul.

In Modern days, there is not much difference from the first concepts of Spas. A Spa day is a chance to unwind and relax – with facilities including plunge pools, steam rooms, saunas, Jacuzzi’s and relaxation areas. It is a chance to take some time out of busy daily life, to revive you. A favourite of ours is the Sienna Spa in Manchester, with its Nordic Sauna and fabulous relaxation area.

In comparison, a pamper day is an opportunity to indulge and treat yourself. This is usually associated with beauty treatments, from top to toe, manicures, facials or pedicures. Like with Spa Days, pampering has a long history from the Egyptians to the Victorians – people have experimented with different beauty therapies for as long as time, in the ancient eras women used concoctions of oil and myrrh to soften skin and 5000 years ago, women in Arab countries used Henna as part of a manicure process.

Now-a-days, Beauty treatments have come a long way, the ways to be pampered a limitless! From chocolate facials, to honey and milk massages and coffee-berry slimming treatments – the ways to make yourself look and feel amazing are amazingly diverse.

So it seems the difference between these two activities is quite apparent. Spa days are used to relax and revitalise, and pamper days are a day of indulgence. However, now-a-days the two processes go hand in hand, you can combine a spa days with pampering treatments, and even afternoon tea for a day of complete relaxation and indulgence. But neither are new concepts. No matter how different our lives are from the ancient Egyptians, we share in common our partialness to pampering ourselves and taking a trip to a spa to relax.
